Neck Pain and Headaches: Could Your Neck Be Contributing?

Neck pain, stiffness and headaches can be uncomfortable, disruptive and sometimes difficult to make sense of. You might notice tension around the base of your skull, discomfort when turning your head, or headaches that seem to start in your neck and spread towards your forehead.

If this sounds familiar, you may be wondering whether your neck is contributing to your symptoms and whether chiropractic care could help.

As a chiropractor in Stockport, I often look at how the neck, movement, daily habits and the wider picture of your health may relate to the symptoms you're experiencing.

However, it's important to understand that headaches can have many different causes, and not all headaches are related to the neck.

Can neck problems cause headaches?

Sometimes, yes. Certain headaches are associated with problems involving the neck and are known as cervicogenic headaches.

These headaches can occur when structures in the upper neck contribute to pain that is felt elsewhere, often around the back of the head, temples or forehead.

You might notice:

  • Neck pain or stiffness alongside your headache.

  • Discomfort that starts at the back of your head and travels forwards.

  • Headaches that are aggravated by particular neck movements or positions.

  • Reduced neck movement or tenderness around the upper neck.

However, these symptoms are not enough to diagnose a cervicogenic headache. Other types of headache, including migraine and tension-type headaches, can also involve neck discomfort.

Understanding what is contributing to your symptoms is therefore an important first step.

What can contribute to neck pain and headaches?

There isn't always one clear cause. Neck pain and headaches can be influenced by several factors, including:

1. Muscle tension and physical strain

Spending long periods working at a computer, driving or looking down at a phone can leave your neck feeling stiff or uncomfortable.

It's not necessarily about having perfect posture. Rather, staying in one position for a long time, particularly when you're tired or under pressure, may make your neck feel more sensitive.

Changing positions regularly, taking movement breaks and finding ways to vary your day can help reduce prolonged physical strain.

2. Stress and your nervous system

Stress can influence how your body experiences pain.

When you're under pressure, you may notice that your shoulders feel tense, your jaw is clenched or your breathing becomes shallower. You may also find that you're sleeping less well or have less opportunity to recover.

These changes can contribute to discomfort and may influence how sensitive you feel to pain.

This doesn't mean your symptoms are imaginary or that stress is necessarily the cause. Neck pain and headaches are real physical experiences, and it's often worth considering both physical and wider lifestyle factors when exploring them.

3. Sleep, recovery and daily habits

Poor sleep, fatigue and changes in your usual routine can affect how you feel physically.

For some people, headaches become more frequent when they're not sleeping well, skipping meals, becoming dehydrated or experiencing a particularly demanding period of life.

These factors don't explain every headache, but they can be useful to explore alongside the physical symptoms.

How can a chiropractor help with neck pain?

If you're looking for a chiropractor in Stockport for neck pain, an important part of the process is understanding what you're experiencing before deciding whether treatment is appropriate.

During an initial chiropractic consultation, I would explore:

  • Where your neck pain or headache is located and when it started.

  • Whether there are particular movements or activities that aggravate it.

  • Your neck movement, muscle tenderness and relevant physical findings.

  • Your general health, medical history and any symptoms that may require further investigation.

Depending on your presentation, chiropractic care may involve manual therapy, soft tissue techniques, movement advice and exercises.

The aim is to help improve comfort and movement where appropriate, while considering what may be contributing to your symptoms.

Chiropractic treatment isn't suitable for every type of headache. If your symptoms suggest another cause, or if further medical assessment is needed, I would recommend that you speak with your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional.

When should you seek medical advice for neck pain and headaches?

Although many headaches are not caused by a serious condition, some symptoms need prompt medical attention.

Seek emergency medical help if you experience a sudden, extremely severe headache that reaches its peak within minutes, or a headache accompanied by symptoms such as new weakness, difficulty speaking, confusion, loss of consciousness or a high fever with a stiff neck.

You should also seek medical advice if your headaches are new, persistent, worsening, significantly different from your usual headaches, or associated with other concerning symptoms.

If you're unsure whether chiropractic care is appropriate, it's always reasonable to discuss your symptoms with your GP first.
